Chakras

Some of you may have noticed at the end of the reflexology session I focus my eyes along the inner edges of your feet. What am I doing you may wonder. I am assessing the energy in each of your chakras, in order to then work any which are out of balance.

The entire universe is made of energy, and the body is no exception. Long before modern technology and science, ancient cultures knew that all living things carried a life force with them. They called the centres of energy that move inside of us, the 7 chakras and they considered these the basis of our human existence.

Chakra is an old Sanskrit word that literally translates to wheel. This is because the life force, or prana, that moves inside of us is spinning and rotating. This spinning energy has 7 centres in your body, starting at the base of your spine and moving all the way up to the top of your head.

The 7 chakras are:

Root Chakra— Represents our foundation and feeling of being grounded.

  • Location: Base of spine in tailbone area.

  • Colour: Red

  • Emotional issues: Survival issues such as financial independence, money and food.

Sacral Chakra— Our connection and ability to accept others and new experiences.

  • Location: Lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel and two inches in.

  • Colour: Orange

  • Emotional issues: Sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure and sexuality.

Solar Plexus chakra— Our ability to be confident and in control of our lives.

  • Location: Upper abdomen in the stomach area.

  • Colour: Yellow

  • Emotional issues: Self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Heart chakra— Our ability to love.

  • Location: Centre of chest just above the heart.

  • Colour: Green

  • Emotional issues: Love, joy and inner peace.

Throat chakra — Our ability to communicate.

  • Location: Throat.

  • Colour: Blue

  • Emotional issues: Communication, self-expression of feelings and the truth.

Third eye chakra— Our ability to focus on and see the big picture.

  • Location: Forehead between the eyes.

  • Colour: Indigo

  • Emotional issues: Intuition, imagination, wisdom and the ability to think and make decisions.

Crown chakra— The highest chakra represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually.

  • Location: The very top of the head.

  • Colour: Violet/ white

  • Emotional issues: Inner and outer beauty, our connection to spirituality and pure bliss.

In a healthy, balanced person, the 7 chakras provide exactly the right amount of energy to every part of your body, mind and spirit. Blocked energy in any of our chakras may lead to illness so it is important to understand what each Chakra represents and what we can do to keep the energy flowing freely- more information is available on many sites on the internet to help with this, together with the encouragement of the free flowing of energy that I assist with in the reflexology treatment.

By learning about the 7 chakras, you can become more in tune with the natural energy cycles of your body.
