About Reflexology

What is reflexology

Reflexology originated several thousand years ago and is known to have been practised by the Ancient Egyptians and Chinese. It has developed over time and more so in the last 100 or so years into reflexology as we know it today.

It is a safe, natural and gentle therapy that encourages the body to balance and heal itself. It is suitable for people of any age.  It involves applying thumb or finger pressure to specific points on the feet or hands. These points are called 'reflexes' and they reflect the organs and structures of the body as well as a person's emotional health.

Reflexology works very much on an individual basis working holistically, treating the body and individual as a whole. It does not claim to be a 'cure-all', but many people have found that they have been helped by reflexology. The aim of reflexology is to create homeostasis, which means that all the organs and systems of the body are all working together at their best.

Treatments can be a wonderful and deeply relaxing; can reduce stress and tension within the body and therefore promote healing and a general sense of well-being.

The treatment- what to expect

All treatments require a full consultation including a medical history and for you to sign a consent form prior to the start of the treatment. During the consultation we will discuss your symptoms and any concerns that you may have. All information is treated in the strictest confidence.

You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and then seated in a reclining chair. I will begin by massaging your feet and then use my thumbs, fingers or knuckles to apply pressure to all areas of the feet and lower legs ( or hands, if hand reflexology). Areas corresponding to parts of the body which are currently imbalanced or have an energy disturbance will feel sensitive or tender when pressed; and these areas along with any areas of imbalance I detect will be further massaged to encourage a free flow of energy to the area and thus throughout the whole body.

It isn't uncommon for people to fall asleep during the treatment and to awaken feeling rested and refreshed.

As a reflexologist my aim is to support you as an individual and help you to improve your own health and well-being. I am not an alternative to medical treatment and I will not claim to diagnose, prescribe or cure. Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice and we encourage you to tell your doctor you are considering/ receiving reflexology.
